Why 90% of Piano Students Fail (and How You Can Succeed)

Picture this: 9-year-old Johnny begs for piano lessons.

His parents finally cave and sign him up. Johnny can’t wait to play his favorite songs and show off to his friends.

At first, lessons are a blast! Everything is new and exciting. Johnny zooms through the basics. But after a few months, the honeymoon ends. Piano starts feeling like work. Johnny has to practice boring stuff like scales. Progress slows way down.

Before long, Johnny makes excuses to skip practice. “Forgets” his books. Within a year, he quits. Another kid bites the piano dust.

As the director of Piano Academy of Jupiter, I’ve seen this story a million times. So what’s going wrong? Why do most piano students crash and burn? And how can we help kids actually stick with it?

Here are the top 5 reasons students fail at piano:

  1. No motivation
  2. Frustration
  3. Lack of discipline
  4. Bad practice habits
  5. Parents not involved

Let’s break these down.

No Motivation

Learning piano takes YEARS. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. And if a kid doesn’t really want to do it, they’ll quit as soon as it gets tough.

Lots of kids start lessons because their parents sign them up. Not because THEY are dying to play. Forcing piano never works long-term.

Even kids who beg for lessons can lose steam. Piano starts feeling like a chore vs something fun. The key is finding ways to keep that inner fire lit!

Frustration

Piano is HARD. It takes forever before you can play cool stuff. And there’s always a new challenge. Students get frustrated and feel like they’ll never be good.

Frustration usually comes from unrealistic expectations. Kids think they’ll be rocking concertos in a few months. Not gonna happen! Piano is a skill you build bit by bit, like working out. It takes patience.

No Discipline

Discipline is doing what you should do, even when you don’t wanna. Like practicing after a long day at school vs vegging on the couch. Or drilling that tricky part for the 100th time.

In our world of instant everything, discipline is rare. But you need it for piano or anything worthwhile. Kids who struggle with discipline in piano probably struggle everywhere.

Many kids start off practicing a ton. But they slack off when the new car smell fades. They skip a day here and there. Then a few days. Then a week. Inconsistency KILLS progress.

Bad Practice

Practice is the magic key to piano success. But BAD practice is just as common as no practice. Doing it wrong = wasted time.

Common practice fails:
– Playing songs over and over without fixing mistakes
– Trying to play too fast too soon
– Not using a metronome
– Noodling around vs doing the work

Kids who learn to practice SMART have a huge leg up. It’s about practicing BETTER, not more.

My kids have passed all their Grade exams with either “Honors” or “High Distinction”, not to mention that they have won numerous prizes and awards in many competitions including several state piano competitions. – Lydia Q.

No Parent Support

Kids need their parents on board to crush piano. And I don’t just mean paying and driving. Parents should:

  • Sit with kids during practice
  • Make piano a priority
  • Create time and space for it at home

Think of piano like soccer. You’d go to games, schlep the uniform, get them to practice. Give piano the same energy!

Of course, there’s a line between supporting and pressuring. The goal is encouraging piano, not forcing it.

So how can kids beat the odds and succeed at piano? Here are my top tips:

1. Find your WHY.

What do you want to get out of piano? Set some exciting goals to keep you motivated when it gets tough. Maybe you want to play in a talent show, write your own songs, or jam with friends. The more personal piano feels, the more you’ll practice.

2. Build discipline.

Set a practice schedule and stick to it, even when you don’t feel like it. Start small, like 10 minutes a day, and gradually increase. The more you flex that discipline muscle, the stronger it gets! And it will spill over into crushing homework, chores, and other goals.

3. Practice like a pro.

Talk to your teacher about how to practice SMART. Break it down into bite-sized bits. Use your metronome to lock in the rhythm. Drill those trouble spots until they’re easy. Keep a practice log to track your progress and see how far you’ve come!

4. Make it fun!

Mix up your practice with music you love. Find piano buddies and play together. Make up your own songs or riffs. Perform for family and soak up the applause. The more fun you have with piano, the more you’ll want to practice.

5. Celebrate the wins.

Take time to appreciate how far you’ve come. Remember that song that was impossible a few months ago? Now you can nail it! Be proud of your progress, big and small.

Piano is a long-term journey, but it’s so worth it. Sticking with piano teaches discipline, creativity, and self-expression. It’s a skill you can enjoy for life – at parties, church, or just playing for yourself. And it’s pretty impressive to non-musical muggles!
